Essential Hypertension, The Essential Hypertension Facts

Unlike the more usual type of hypertension that comes on through years and can be caused by controllable circumstances such as obesity, essential hypertension has no such cause. It is often said that this type of hypertension just is and so it is dealt with as an inherited situation as opposed to a provoked one. Because essential hypertension is its own cause, it is also called primary hypertension.
The Prognosis
Usually a patient's treatment for essential hypertension will include medication. This not to say such things as alcohol consumption and weight control are ignored, but since these things by definition are not causes for essential hypertension, usually it will take hypertension medication to control it. Still, essential hypertension can be controlled and so, it is not seen as a serious ailment so long as it is controlled without some unusual complication.
The Overall View
Essential hypertension is a somewhat broad term since sometimes one patient may be helped by a treatment that another patient was oblivious to. Still, the fact every patient doesn't respond to the same treatment doesn't mean these patients are not inflicted with the type of elevated blood pressure that is truly essential, or primary. The only thing that is truly important with high blood pressure is finding out what will control it.
The medical profession knows how to deal with essential hypertension and in each individual case a doctor will come up with the best plan to treat the patient. This is true even though a period of trial and error will often be required.
Because blood pressure medication is meant to be taken daily, no dosages should be missed. This is because hypertension medication has a cumulative effect and skipping a dose lessens the power of the overall treatment.
Blood pressure medications are designed to work by being taken in consistent dosages every day at the same time during the day. By altering this routine, even slightly, the patient could render the medication ineffective. This, in turn, would put him/her at a greatly increased risk for a heart attack or a stroke. This, of course, is not a desirable option.
Tell Your Doctor
Once the medication has been administered, it is important the patient let the doctor know if he/she is feeling any ill effects from it. Sometimes, the type or just the amount of the medication will have to be changed once or even twice before the best prescription is found. This is because, of course every one is different and so, the first prescription can be a bit of a guessing game.
Though hypertension is a disease usually thought as something that develops as people start to age, essential hypertension is more prevalent in people who are young. In fact, teenagers are its number one target. This is because whereas aging can be a cause of ordinary hypertension, essential hypertension is present without a cause.
Because hypertension had not been discovered too many generations ago, a very popular hypothesis at this point in time is that essential hypertension is genetic. Of course, it will have to be studied for a longer period of time before a conclusion as to whether or not it is inherited can be made.
