How To Help Someone With Depression - Be Understanding
A few years ago, I had a friend who was suffering from depression. I didn't have any clue on how to help someone with depression. To be honest, my first thought was that it was all in his head and that he was just feeling sorry for himself. Boy was that a major mistake on my part. After reading up on the disorder, I realized that my initial reaction was actually a pretty common mistake.
When I was well versed about the disease, I informed my friend that I thought he was suffering from depression. I told him all that I had read and passed along the information to him. Initially, he discounted my suggestion and actually stopped chatting to me for a bit. When he did start to think something was not right with him, he slowly came back to me and asked for some support.
I told him that I would call around to help him find someone who could help him professionally. Even though he located a doctor on his own, he did appreciate my support and help. I even offered to drive him to his appointment.
He began to get better after seeing the doctor a few times. I did know, from my reading, that there were going to be some roller coaster days ahead and that is what happened. I was just there for him on both the good and bad days.
Now I know what I did wasn't the reason why he recovered or that I am an expert on how to help someone with depression, but I was there from start to finish and I was happy to help in any way possible.
