Understanding depression is the first step towards conquering the illness. You may have heard about depression and you may think you know all about it but this may not be the case. This is because there are several types of this illness and sometimes each type may have some distinct signs and symptoms. It is important to know what it is and how it can affect your life. This condition is not difficult to understand and being educated about it can help get a clear picture of what it really is. This illness can range from mild to severe. Severe depression is often referred to as major depressive order, clinical depression or chronic depression.

Understanding depression involves knowing the symptoms of the disease. Some signs and symptoms of severe depression are feeling irritated, sad, angry and moody. You will experience sleeping disorders such as insomnia or hypersomnia, a condition that leads to oversleeping.

Illusions where you hear sounds that are actually nonexistent and the inability to distinguish between reality and imagination are other signs. There will be either an increase or a decrease in appetite leading to either a loss or gain in weight. Developing suicidal thoughts is another sign of severe depression. Sometimes, there could be suicidal attempts. You will lose interest in hobbies or activities that you used to enjoy and you will also have difficulties in concentrating.

A physician will diagnose you based on these symptoms. Diagnosis will involve a thorough mental or psychological evaluation to determine whether you really have the condition or if there is another underlying cause. Depending on the type that you have, a physician will prescribe medication. Treatment can involve the use of antidepressants or therapy.
