Living With Your Low Carb Diet
People usually choose low carb diets for one of two reasons: they're interested in losing weight or they want to improve their health. Of course, low carb diets tend to accomplish both goals simultaneously. One thing which is important to keep in mind about low carb diets is that they arent t really meant as a short term quick fix, but should be made a part of your lifestyle.
Simple Carbohydrates
There are different kinds of carbohydrates. There are both simple and complex carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates are usually found in foods which contain refined flours or sugars.
One example of these foods is pasta, or at least the garden variety pasta you'll find at any grocery and served in restaurants. There are however healthier, low carb pastas you can buy as well.
Sugary foods also tend to be filled with simple carbs; these include donuts, cookies and other sweets. If you are eating a low carb diet, then these are foods you'll want to avoid.
Simple carbohydrates are digested extremely fast, which means that you'll be hungry again soon after eating foods which contain them. Meals and snacks which are filled with simple carbohydrates have no place in low carb diets. These foods tend to have little nutritional value and since they cause you to eat more often, they tend to produce weight gain.
Switching To Low Carb Diets
Some have an easier time moving to low carb diets than do others. It's easiest to start slowly and switch over to a low carb diet bit by bit.
You can start by eating one low carb meal per day as this will start to pare down your caloric intake and get you used to eating this diet. After a week or two, start eating two low carb meals per day and in another few weeks, make the change complete by having all of your meals be low carb ones.
Similarly, you'll want to choose low carb snacks. Raw unsalted nuts are an excellent choice. They have enough protein and fat content to keep you energetic and feeling full until the next mealtime arrives. Fresh fruit also makes for a healthy snack. It's true that fruit does contain carbohydrates, but these are the much healthier complex carbohydrates. Fruit also contains a lot of vitamins and minerals which help your body meet its nutritional requirements.
Treat Yourself
It can be hard to stick with a diet, particularly as you begin. While you need to stay focused and exercise self-discipline, allow yourself the occasional meal or snack which doesn't fit into your diet.
Keep the portion sizes of these occasional treats reasonable and keep these indiscretions rare. If you're eating these unhealthy meals on a daily basis, then you're not really eating a low carb diet at all!
